The zero conditional.
We use the zero conditional to talk about situations that involve universal truths or general facts. We will use the Present simple in the conditional phrase as in the trigger.
Structure: If + subject + present simple, + subject + present simple.
For example.
- If you mix red and white, you get pink. (Si mezclas rojo con blanco tienes rosa)
- Plants die if they don’t get enough water. (Las plantas mueren si no tienen agua)
- If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils. (Si calientas agua a 100 grados, hierve)
- My teacher gets angry if I don’t study. (Mi maestra se pone furiosa si no estudio)
- If she sleeps well, she rests. (Si ella duerme bien, descansa)
- If you want to come, call me before 3:00. (Si quieres venir, llámame antes de las 3:00)
First conditional.
We will use the first conditional to talk about particular situations that can happen safely. We also use it when we talk about future plans, threats, warnings and promises or to convince someone of something.
To do this, we will use Present Simple and Future Simple. Its structure is also divided into two sentences, with the condition that the first occurs, the following may occur:
If + subject + present simple,+ subject + present simple.
For example.
- I will help you get ready for the party if I get there on time. (Te ayudaré a prepararte para la fiesta si llego a tiempo)
- If it gets cold you can use my coat. (Si hace frío puedes usar mi abrigo)
- If you train you will have a better performance. (Si entrenas tendrás un mejor desempeño)
- If you feel hungry you can take food from the fridge. (Si tienes hambre puedes tomar comida de la nevera)
- I will make dinner for you if you come tonight. (Te haré la cena si vienes esta noche)
- If you come tonight I will make dinner for you. (Si vienes esta noche, te haré la cena)
